Museum of Bath Stone April 2026 Events

A quick update and news of upcoming events.

The Museum started the year off with some much-needed repairs, and we have started to create new signage and labels to improve the visitor experience. We hope we can share news about displays and accreditation progress later on in the year, but for now, we have some exciting events coming up in April to share:

Combined Combe Down Heritage Open Day

On Sunday, 26th April, both the Museum of Bath Stone and the Bath Jewish Burial Ground will be open on the same day for the very first time. This is an opportunity to explore the deep history of this extraordinary corner of Bath, all in one visit, and completely free of charge. The Museum is open from 11am to 3pm. The Combe Down Heritage Society will also be at the Museum, where you can find out about their work to research, preserve and celebrate the heritage of the village.

This will be the Bath Jewish Burial Ground’s first open day of 2026. Open hours are 11am to 4pm. The site offers a moving and fascinating window into the social history of Bath’s Jewish community. This year brings something extra special: the brand-new permanent exhibition in the site’s beautifully restored former quarry workers’ cottage will open to the public for the very first time.

And why not take the opportunity to visit the King William pub, right next door to the Museum, which has recently reopened and will be serving drinks and a traditional Sunday lunch from noon. Built in 1824 by Job Salter as a house and brewery, its history is tied to that of the quarrymen of Combe Down.

World Heritage Day 2026

The Museum will again be at Bath’s World Heritage Day event on Saturday, 18th April (11am-3pm). Find our stall at the Guildhall to hear more about what we do and the lives of the quarrymen of Combe Down. Other Bath museums and heritage sites will also have stalls there, and talks include one by the Bath Record Office, ‘What a Conservator Does’ (12:30), and one by the Museum of Bath at Work, ‘That’s Entertainment: Bath at Leisure’ (13:45).

Our friends, the Combe Down Heritage Society, have a couple of upcoming talks:

Wednesday 15th April, a talk entitled The Admiralty in Bath by Tony Coverdale, with a focus on the Admiralty’s (later the Navy Department of the Ministry of Defence) presence at Foxhill. This is being held at The Hub, Mulberry Park, start time 7:30pm, followed by our AGM at around 8.45pm.

Wednesday 13th May, a talk entitled Burlington by Nick McCamley, which details the use of the old stone quarries at Corsham, Wiltshire, as a place where the Government could be moved to, if required, during the Cold War. This will be held at Combe Down School, Summer Lane, start time 7:30pm.
