Uncovering Combe Down's stone heritage

Uncovering Combe Down’s stone heritage

The Museum of Bath Stone, in association with Combe Down Heritage Society and Friends of Firs Field ask you to help save our stone heritage.

Ralph Allen‘s stone quarries have disappeared, filled with 600,000 cubic metres of foamed concrete to stabilise the village.

We have little to show that the stone that built Bath came from under our houses.

By the chestnut tree in Firs Field are the remains of a shaft wall where Combe Down freestone was hauled out, then sent down to the River Avon at Widcombe for the building of the World Heritage City of Bath.

We propose to restore part of this wall and create a curved seat for all to enjoy.

It is our memorial to Ralph Allen’s role in the building of Georgian Bath with Combe Down stone. It will also commemorate the stabilisation project that, by 2009, restored the village to safety.

With the approval and support of B&NES, our local councillors Bob Goodman and Cherry Beath, the UNESCO World Heritage Enhancement Fund, conservation professionals and local community groups, we now have seed money pledged but need to raise a further £6,000 to get this project underway.
