The History of World Heritage in Combe Down

April 16 @ 19:00 - 21:00

Free

Museum of Bath Stone interiorIn this talk, Barry Gilbertson will discuss the history of World Heritage and how Bath’s inscription on the world list in 1987 makes it one of only two cities in Europe with a citywide World Heritage Site (WHS) designation.  He will explain the five aspects of Outstanding Universal Value attributed to the City of Bath in the UNESCO inscription, and why the inscription is so valuable to Bath’s future and to our economy here in Combe Down.

Barry Gilbertson, is a Chartered Surveyor by background, and 123rd President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2004-5.  He has been a member of the Georgian Group for more than 30 years, and a former Trustee (and still a Volunteer Guide) with the Bath Preservation Trust. Professor Barry Gilbertson was appointed as the new Chairman of the City of Bath UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2017.

In this pro-bono role, Barry chairs the WHS Advisory Board with 24 representatives from 16 international, national and local bodies as stakeholders with a clear interest in the preservation and enhancement of our city’s heritage and setting.  Barry also chairs the Bath World Heritage Enhancement Fund (WHEF). The fund helps value improvement projects within the public realm of the city, including our lovely village of Combe Down.  The WHEF has just recently granted a sum of money towards the Combe Down Stone Circle Restoration Project that will rejuvenate, preserve, and conserve the last remaining above ground archaeology of the villages renowned mines.

Barry’s other interests locally include serving on the Council of the University of Bath, Honorary Surveyor to St John’s Foundation, Chairing the Circus Area Residents Association and watching Bath Rugby.
